“You can’t lose something you never had.”
***
A Matthew McConaughey film so far pre-McConaissance, and so deep into his romantic comedy phase that it will make you all the more thankful that he’s moved onto bigger and better things. In How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, he and Kate Hudson star as two morally bankrupt go-getters who forego any sense of self-respect in an escalatingly daft ruse to further their own careers.
It’s only the wholly committed and thoroughly charming performances from Hudson and McConaughey that shine a touch of brightness into what’s an otherwise questionable and convoluted affair. Swinging from mean-spirited silliness right into all of the genre pitfalls it mocks, it’s one of the least romantic romcoms you’re ever likely to witness.
