Bunkers, Zombies and the Apocalypse: The UK Premiere of Fear the Walking Dead

Fear the Walking Dead has been unleashed worldwide! After an incredibly successful launch in the USA, AMC followed it up with their UK premiere this week, bringing the apocalypse along with them, which was attended by yours truly.

The setting: An old, shuttered up and worn down art school in Central London, given a new lease of life as a shelter from the outbreak of the undead. Having been greeted by a duo of surly and burly Epidemic Neutralisation Department security guards, I found myself ushered through a virus scanner (don’t worry, all clear) into a fantastically realised bunker, a supposed safe haven from the outside world; complete with barrels, rations, bunk beds and, erm, a big old television and cocktail bar…..if the world does end, this is the place to go out in style.

Take a look inside the world’s best stocked apocalypse bunker:

Well stocked though it most certainly was, that didn’t stop the odd soon-to-be-walker making an appearance. It’s all fun and games until someone gets bitten.

Fortunately, we were also provided with a handy symptom checker leaflet. If you see loved ones showing any of the listed symptoms, be sure to have them “seen to” immediately.

The main event was of course the screening of Fear the Walking Dead’s pilot episode, and thankfully it was a whole lot of fun, with plenty of solid foundations laid and much to be optimistic about moving forward. A full review will be incoming shortly, watch this space….

The quietly confident comments from the AMC/BT representatives alluded to a successful launch in the US, and with the viewership figures now officially released it’s clear to see why they had reason to be pleased. Fear the Walking Dead is now the proud owner of the record for having the most seen pilot episode of any US cable TV show ever. A minuscule 10.1 million viewers, to be precise! To put that into perspective, the season five finale of HBO’s goliath series Game of Thrones had around 8.11 million viewers, and the series opener of The Walking Dead was seen by 5.35 million people.

Fear the Walking Dead continues on Sundays in the US, whilst the pilot debuts in the UK just days after the launch of the new AMC UK channel, on August 31st.
