It’s Business, It’s Business Time!

In 2009, HBO’s Flight of the Conchords came to an end after just two seasons, and the world suddenly became a darker place. Gone from our lives were the angelic voices of “the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand”, and gone was their manager – the greatest manager of all time – Murray Hewitt (Rhys Darby).

Dark clouds descended on the world, television lost 50% of its appeal, New Zealand instantly fell off the map, and the duo of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie rode off into the sunset. But if we took any life lesson from the show, it’s that two minutes in heaven is better than one minute in heaven. We’d had our two minutes, and it was time to move on.

Both actors have gone onto pastures new in the intervening years, with Jemaine recently starring alongside fellow Flight of the Conchords alumni Rhys Darby in What We Do in the Shadows, and Bret bagged himself an Oscar for Best Original Song for his work on The Muppets:

Although I’m sure we can all agree this is just an amazing song, this along with a brief reunion for Red Nose Day only served to fan the flames of longing for a full return for the duo.

But today, I’m happy to report that the dark clouds that gathered are once more dissipating. Comrades, Flight of the Conchords are returning, for an unprecedented third minute in heaven….possibly, probably! Here’s what Clement had to say:

“We have actually started writing one…Who knows if it will ever be made, we’ve written some notes for some different film ideas. We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, “The film is going to be like this,” it could be this, this, this, this, this.”

Whilst non-commital on a film, he did confirm at the least that a new tour is likely to be on the way:

“We were planning on doing it this summer, but then I ended up doing The BFG instead…So it’s my fault we didn’t do it this time. But we are hoping to announce a tour. We’ll announce it before the end of the year, hopefully, and then some time next year get on the road … after we get some new guitar strings and that sort of thing.”

Here’s hoping that their manager Murray isn’t booking the dates…

Happy days! Any excuse for us all to watch this for the millionth time…

I can’t even think of a favorite moment, but the first episode with the robots and Murray filming them on the flip phone was good at setting the tone for the series.

Also, all the New Zealand marketing materials in Murray’s office 😀

It’s all golden, but anything with Murray is just genius 🙂
